Here is Suzie in her own words. “I am a doctor based in Scotland in the UK. After a first degree in molecular and cell biology, I went on to study medicine and now work in the department of trauma and orthopaedic surgery. I also recently completed a Masters in Modern History studying military medical hierarchies in the 19th century. I was introduced to low carb diets by my brother who gave me a copy of Gary Taubes book The Diet Delusion back in 2009. For ten years I didn’t really commit and felt like everyone thought it was mad. I would read around it, and try it here and there for a few days but always go back to standard diet. I ate lots of low-fat foods and calorie counted. Despite being into rugby, karate and being in the Territorial Army, I was fit but I put on more and more weight. Eventually, there was a moment where I decided enough was enough and I ditched the carbs and started reading. By now a large online low carb community had built up which helps. One year on, I’m 35lb down and feeling the benefits. I’m also a fan of intermittent fasting. I’m massively frustrated for so many of my patients who need hip and knee replacements but could benefit from so much more help with respect to diet and nutrition.”
